Hurricane Fly breaks Grade 1 record

Willie Mullins's Hurricane Fly wins a record 17th Grade 1 race at Punchestown.

Hurricane Fly became the first horse to win 17 Grade 1 races this afternoon courtesy of a victory at Punchestown.

The Willie Mullins-trained nine-year-old was the strong favourite going into the race, with some bookmakers offering odds of 1-15 that the gelding would come out on top of a five-horse field.

Ridden by Ruby Walsh, the two-time Champion Hurdle winner was able to cross the line first, although the winning margin was not as large as many had predicted.

The win has taken Hurricane Fly above Kauto Star and American champion John Henry, both of whom recorded 16 victories during their careers.
