Rule The World wins Grand National ahead of The Last Samuri

Rule The World, a 33-1 shot, wins the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree ahead of 8-1 joint-favourite The Last Samuri.

Rule The World streaked away from The Last Samuri to win the Crabbie's Grand National at Aintree this afternoon.

The 33-1 shot, ridden by 19-year-old National debutant David Mullins, has shot to stardom with his maiden win over fence on the biggest stage.

He is the first horse since the 1800s to secure his maiden win in the famous steeplechase.

Rule The World shot past 8-1 joint-favourite The Last Samuri and 100-1 shot Vics Canvas down the home straight as only 16 horses finished in heavy conditions in Liverpool.

Many Clouds (8-1), last year's winner and favourite in the build-up, was well placed under Leighton Aspell, the winning jockey the last two years, for much of the gruelling race but could not finish strong and missed out on become the first horse since Red Rum in 1974 to win the race in consecutive years.

All the horses have been reported as safe and sound, despite only 16 making it to the finish.
