Qatar 2022 World Cup games 'could kick off at 1am'

Games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar could start as late as 1am, according to a proposal from a potential candidate for the presidency of FIFA.

Qatar World Cup games in 2022 could kick off as late as 1am, according to a potential challenger for the FIFA presidency.

Since the Gulf state was controversially awarded the right to stage the tournament in eight years' time, it has been widely thought that the competition may need to move to the winter to avoid the extreme heat of a Qatari summer.

However, Harold Mayne-Nicholls, who is mulling a bid to oust Sepp Blatter as the head of football's world governing body, believes that the World Cup could be staged nearer to its traditional summer date if kickoff times are moved later into the night.

The former Chilean football chief told BBC Sport: "You could play the first games at 7pm, the second games at 10pm and the third matches at 1am.

"You could move it towards May, until the middle of June. The weather would still be very warm at night, but the sun is not there and that could help.

"I know it's not easy. We'd sleep during the day and work during the night. It's only an idea. You'd have to investigate a little bit more."

Blatter has been in charge of FIFA since succeeding Joao Havelange as president in 1998.
