Wolverhampton Wanderers fans angry over Jack Hayward statue

Wolverhampton Wanderers fans express their outrage at being asked to help fund a statue for the late former club president Sir Jack Hayward.

Wolverhampton Wanderers fans have reacted angrily after being asked to donate £10 to help fund a statue of the late former club president Sir Jack Hayward.

The millionaire businessman died at the age of 91 in January 2015, eight years after selling the Midlands side to Steve Morgan for £10 and the promise of significant investment into the club.

A fundraising plan backed by supporter groups and Wolverhampton Council was announced on Wednesday, with the aim of raising the £250,000 required to build the statue through "symbolic" fan donations of £10.

Following the announcement, a number of fans got in touch with local newspaper the Express & Star to express their outrage at the campaign, which comes just weeks after Wolves sold striker Benik Afobe to Premier League side Bournemouth for £10m.

Twitter user @RobJamesMorris said of the fundraising drive: "Latest attempt by @officialwolves to prey on fans' goodwill and loyalty. Club should be paying for this!"

One fan declared that Wolves had become "a joke of a club... embarrassing", while another wrote: "been going to wolves since late seventies after this treaty don't feel like going anymore.Take take take"

The Championship side was put up for sale by Morgan last September.
