Former Sunderland footballer Adam Johnson has been found not guilty of one count of sexual activity with a child, but the jury remains undecided on the remaining charge.

The 28-year-old was charged with two counts of sexual activity with a child under the age of 16, both of which he denied.

Johnson is alleged to have engaged in a sex act with a 15-year-old girl while the pair were in his parked car during a meeting last January.

The alleged sexual activity took place during the second meeting between the pair - the first involved Johnson handing over two signed Sunderland football shirts to the teenager.

After a 13-day trial at Bradford Crown Court, where Johnson's girlfriend Stacey Flounders testified that their relationship was over, the 12-person jury retired to consider their verdicts.

On Wednesday, the jury returned to court to deliver a verdict of not guilty for one count of sexual activity, specifically oral sex, with the 15-year-old girl, but they were undecided on the second count relating to sexual touching by Johnson.

The judge has informed the jury that a majority verdict will not be accepted.
