Adam Johnson wiped from England history after child sex conviction

Convicted child sex offender Adam Johnson is stripped of his 12 England caps by the Football Association, a court hears.

A court has heard that Adam Johnson has been stripped of his 12 England caps after being found guilty of sexual activity with a child.

The former Sunderland winger's defence team revealed that he has been wiped from Three Lions history while summarising their case at the 28-year-old's sentencing at Bradford Crown Court.

Earlier this month Johnson was found guilty of one child sex charge and cleared of another after initially pleading guilty to one count of kissing a 15-year-old and one count of grooming.

Johnson said goodbye to his daughter this morning before leaving for court, where he is expected to be given a prison sentence of between four and ten years.

During their final statement before sentencing, the defence team, led by Orlando Pownall QC, told the court: "[Johnson] has been stripped of his England caps, some might say rightly so. He has lost a lucrative career he will never be able to retrieve."

Pownall also indicated today that Johnson would be appealing his conviction.
