Tim Howard, Brad Friedel end feud over book claims

Tim Howard and Brad Friedel end their feud over the Everton goalkeeper's claims that the Tottenham shot-stopper blocked his move to Man United back in 2003.

USA goalkeepers Tim Howard and Brad Friedel have ended their dispute over the Everton shot-stopper's claims that his ex-international teammate blocked his move to Manchester United.

Howard wrote in his book The Keeper that Friedel refused to sign a letter of recommendation for a work permit ahead of a move from New York MetroStars to United in 2003.

After hearing the claims, the Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper demanded an apology from his compatriot, who has since decided to remove the claims from future copies of his book.

Howard wrote on Twitter: "In telling the story of my move to Manchester United from MLS, I describe at length a number of obstacles that potentially stood in the way of a massive career-changing opportunity. One of many such obstacles that I discuss in this context is opposition to my work permit by the PFA and, as I understood at the time, Brad Friedel.

"Brad takes issue with my characterisation of his position and [the] events. At the time, I was surprised that Brad would not automatically sign my letter of recommendation, and I took this as an opposition to my application. Brad later explained that he had not in fact opposed my efforts to seek a work permit, either by writing to the PFA or otherwise.

"I have decided to take Brad at his word. Accordingly, I have directed my publisher to amend future copies of my book by striking reference to Brad's opposition."

Friedel retweeted the statement and added: "Glad it's over, happy to move on."

The 43-year-old has been playing in England since 1997 when he joined Liverpool and remained at Anfield for three years before signing for Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Spurs.
