San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith was arrested on Sunday after falsely claiming that he was in possession of a bomb in Los Angeles International Airport.
The incident occurred when the 24-year-old was going through a security line and made the comment, before being quickly detained and then charged.
Smith was released on a $20,000 (£11,900) bail and will now await the decision of the Los Angeles district attorney to see if they pursue a formal charge.
A spokesman for LA district attorney told CSN Bay Area: "Since he bailed out, it may be a while before any charges are presented to our office for filing consideration."
Smith was previously charged with driving under the influence and being in possession of felony weapons, in two separate incidents last year.
