Russia fined for racist chants during France match

World Cup hosts Russia are fined for the racist abuse aimed at France players during a friendly in St Petersburg.

The Russian Football Union has been fined £22,000 by FIFA for racist chants the national team's fans aimed at France players during a friendly match between the two countries.

Paul Pogba, Ousmane Dembele and N'Golo Kante were subjected to abuse during Les Bleus' 3-1 win against the World Cup hosts at the Krestovsky Stadium in March.

"FIFA has a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination," said the governing body in a statement.

"Following a thorough investigation including the review of video evidence, after analysing all the specific circumstances of the case, in particular, the gravity of the incident but also the limited number of fans involved, [FIFA has] decided that the Russian Football Union was liable for a breach of article 58."

Racism is a serious issue in Russian football, with the Football Against Racism in Europe anti-discrimination network having recorded 89 racist and far-right incidents during games held in the country last season.
