The Rugby Football League has announced that Super League referee Chris Leatherbarrow has died, aged 26.
The young match official, who was well known throughout the sport, passed away on Sunday.
A statement from RFL chief executive Nigel Wood said: "We are all truly shocked and saddened by the news of Chris Leatherbarrow's untimely death.
"This is a dreadful tragedy and our thoughts and prayers are with Chris's family, friends and colleagues at this terrible time."
Leatherbarrow, who officiated regularly in the Super League, leaves behind a young daughter.
The cause of his death is yet to be revealed.
