The Steenkamps' lawyer expects Oscar Pistorius to serve two years behind bars

The lawyer of Reeva Steenkamp's family believes that Oscar Pistorius will serve two years in prison, not just 10 months as has been suggested.

The lawyer representing Reeva Steenkamp's family believes that Oscar Pistorius will spend two years in jail, despite reports claiming that the Paralympian will only serve 10 months behind bars.

Judge Thokozile Masipa sentenced the double amputee to five years in prison for the culpable homicide [manslaughter] of his girlfriend.

The 27-year-old claimed that he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired four gunshots through a toilet door at his home in Pretoria, South Africa in the early hours of Valentine's Day last year.

The six-time Paralympic champion's defence team have claimed that the convicted killer will spend 10 months in jail before serving the remainder of his sentence under house arrest, but the Steenkamps' lawyer Dup de Bruyn believes differently.

De Bruyn told AFP: "In effect he gets three years' correctional supervision [house arrest] and two years' direct imprisonment."

Steenkamp's father Barry has admitted that he is "very glad" that the trial is over.
