Michael Schumacher retains consciousness despite banging his head on a rock while skiing in France.

Michael Schumacher is still conscious after banging his head on a rock while skiing, according to the latest reports in France.

Christophe Gernignon-Lecomte, director of the Meribel resort, told RMC Sport that Schumacher banged his head against a rock while skiing off-piste but avoided serious injury because he was wearing a helmet.

Gernignon-Lecomte said that the German tumbled at 11.07am local time and response was at his side within 10 minutes' time.

"He was shocked, a little shaken but conscious," Gernignon-Lecomte added.

A seven-time Formula 1 world champion, Schumacher was airlifted to hospital in Grenoble where he is now said to be recovering.
