Rugby League legends get Wembley statue
Rugby League legends Martin Offiah, Alex Murphy, Billy Boston, Eric Ashton and Gus Risman will be immortalised with a group statue outside Wembley.

A group of rugby league legends will be immortalised with a statue outside Wembley Stadium, it was announced today.

Martin Offiah, Alex Murphy, Billy Boston, Eric Ashton and Gus Risman have been chosen for the honour that celebrates the Challenge Cup being held at the stadium since 1929.

A shortlist of players was provided by a public vote and a number of selection panels, before the RFL board of directors made the final choice.

"The RFL board's view echoed that of the many thousands of people who were involved in the selection process in that the statue needed to be a group representation," said RFL chief executive Nigel Wood.

"So many players have contributed to the rich history of the sport and its association with Wembley and the board were keen that that should be reflected in the statue.

"Having Risman, Boston, Ashton, Murphy and Offiah all part of the statue means that every generation of the sport is celebrated."

Rugby league becomes only the second sport to be recognised with a statue outside Wembley, joining England's 1966 World Cup winning captain Bobby Moore.
