Oscar Pistorius's defence lawyer launches scathing attack on state's case

Oscar Pistorius's defence lawyer Barry Roux slams the prosecution's case in the Paralympic champion's murder trial.

Oscar Pistorius's defence lawyer Barry Roux has accused the prosecution of making a number of mistakes during their case in the Paralympic champion's murder trial.

Roux launched a scathing attack on the state after prosecutor Gerrie Nel finished delivering his closing argument at the High Court in Pretoria today.

Pistorius denies murder by claiming that he mistook his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp for an intruder when he fired four shots through a bathroom door at his home on Valentine's Day last year.

Nel, who described the double amputee as being a "deceitful witness", argues that Pistorius shot dead the South African model after the couple had a row in the early hours of the morning.

In response, Roux told the court that the police made numerous errors, including disturbing the crime scene, but has insisted that he is not claiming a conspiracy against the athlete.

It was also alleged in court that former lead detective Hilton Botha told "blatant lies" and Roux drew on the fact that the prosecution refused to call him to the witness stand.

Roux will continue his closing argument tomorrow before the judge retires to consider her verdict.
