Olympic swimming hero Michael Phelps has apologised after he was arrested and charged with drink-driving.
The 29-year-old, who returned to the sport this year after retiring, was pulled over by police in his home state of Baltimore, Maryland in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
Phelps, who is the most successful Olympian of all time with 22 medals, is said to have been travelling at 84mph in a 45mph zone while also crossing double lines.
In response to the charge, Phelps wrote on Twitter: "I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down. I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility."
Phelps was given 18 months probation back in 2004 after he was arrested for drink-driving at the age of 19.
