OJ Simpson granted parole after nine years in prison

Former NFL player OJ Simpson is granted parole for a Las Vegas robbery.

Former NFL star OJ Simpson has been granted parole for a Las Vegas robbery after serving nine years behind bars.

The 70-year-old could be freed as early as October after Nevada commissioners approved his release.

"I've done my time," Simpson said in a statement following the verdict. "I've done it as well and as respectfully as anybody can. I think if you talk to the wardens they'll tell you.

"I've not complained for nine years. All I've done is try to be helpful... and that's the life I've tried to live because I want to get back to my kids and family."

Simpson was convicted of armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and 11 other charges following an incident in a Vegas hotel in 2007.

In 1995, the ex-Hall of Fame running back was famously acquitted for double murder after emerging as the chief suspect for the killing of his former wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Simpson was found to be liable for their deaths in a civil lawsuit two years later and ordered to pay $25m (£19m) in punitive damages.

His conviction for the crimes connected to the Las Vegas hotel incident came in 2008, exactly 13 years to the day after he was acquitted of killing his ex-wife.
