EFL 'to double TV rights income'

The EFL is set to more than double the income it receives from TV rights under the next broadcast deal.

The EFL is said to be in line to more than double the amount it receives from TV rights to at least £180m.

A new broadcasting contract beginning in the 2019-20 season will see the EFL vastly increase the number of games made available for TV broadcast in the UK from 112 games a season to 324, including 228 from the Championship.

Sky Sports currently holds the exclusive rights to the EFL in the UK but the new rights will be split into several packages, which could be shared among several broadcasters.

One package is for weekend games, with 228 matches included, while the weeknight package includes 96 matches and a third package covers a potentially-unlimited number of games from the EFL Cup.

The deadline for bids was earlier this week and according to the Daily Mail, both Sky Sports and BT Sport submitted "sizeable" bids, leading the league to contemplate a second round of bidding in an attempt to push the price up further.

The value of the EFL broadcast rights remains dwarfed by that of the Premier League, however, with the current contract bringing in more than £5.1 billion over three seasons.
