Public memorial service to be held at Auckland's Eden Park for Jonah Lomu

New Zealand prime minister John Key announces that a public memorial service will be held at Eden Park next week for late All Blacks star Jonah Lomu.

New Zealand prime minister John Key has announced that a public memorial service will be held at Eden Park in Auckland for late All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu.

The former rugby star, who had been dealing with a rare kidney condition for many years, passed away last week at the age of 40.

The service, which will take place at the same stadium that hosted the 2011 Rugby World Cup final, will be held on November 30.

"Jonah touched people's lives across the country and around the world," said Key. "This service will be open to all members of the public who want to remember the significant contribution Jonah made, not only to rugby here and overseas, but also to the wider community through his work with charities such as UNICEF and Kidney Kids NZ.

"The service will be a celebration of Jonah's life and I expect a large number of people will want to be there."

A private funeral for Lomu's family will be held on December 1.
