New York City FC fail in bid to secure Belmont Park site

New York City FC lose out in their bid to secure a site for a new stadium on the grounds of the Belmont Park racetrack to the NHL's New York Islanders.

New York City FC have failed in their bid to secure a site for a new stadium on the grounds of the Belmont Park racetrack.

The MLS franchise, who currently play at the Yankee Stadium, had hoped to build their own stadium on the Long Island site.

However, the bidding process has been won by NHL side New York Islanders, who are now set to move out of Brooklyn and back closer to their previous home.

The Islanders played at the Nassau Coliseum in Hempstead from 1972 until 2015 but have spent the last two seasons sharing the Barclays Center with the NBA's Brooklyn Nets.

NYC FC, who have had the likes of Frank Lampard, David Villa and Andrea Pirlo on their books, entered the MLS in 2015 and have been looking for a permanent stadium site ever since.
