Zlatan Ibrahimovic to be honoured with statue in Stockholm

Zlatan Ibrahimovic says that he is honoured by the announcement that he will have a statue erected in Stockholm after once again being named as Sweden's top player.

Manchester United striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is to have a statue erected in his honour after being named as Sweden's top player for a 10th year running.

The 35-year-old was awarded Sweden's version of the Golden Ball at an awards ceremony in Stockholm on Monday, extending his dominance of the accolade to the milestone decade mark.

Ibrahimovic, who joined the Red Devils from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer as a free agent, will be honoured in his homeland with a bronze sculpture that is in the process of being created by artist Peter Linde.

The statue will stand outside the Friend Arena in Stockholm - the ground where Ibrahimovic scored arguably his most memorable ever goal when finding the net against England with an overhead kick in 2012.

"After all the hard work for 15 years in the national team, and 20 in my club career, it feels like it is appreciated," he said at the ceremony. "The guy from Rosengard will get his own statue in the capital. A big thank you to everyone. It's huge for me. Most people do not get a statue until they have passed away."

Ibrahimovic called time on his international career at the end of Euro 2016, bowing out with 62 goals in 116 games for the Scandinavian nation.
