Manchester United are reportedly considering an expansion of Old Trafford which would take the stadium's capacity to 88,000.

The club are eyeing an additional 12,000 seats in the Sir Bobby Charlton stand, which would put Old Trafford's capacity on a par with Wembley's 90,000.

The news comes as the railway line at the back of the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand, which was formerly cited as an obstacle to any expansion, can be overlooked due to advances in stadium technology which will protect the railway.

United originally planned the move because a new disabled section for fans, which is expected to be completed by 2020, will reduce Old Trafford's capacity to around 73,000.

The club hope, after being given the all-clear to expand their stadium, that they can increase the capacity to 88,000.

If the additional seating is installed, Old Trafford will overtake San Siro, the Bernabeu and the Stade de France as one of the biggest stadiums in Europe.
