Manchester United and Liverpool have been asked to participate in FIFA's new 24-team Club World Cup, according to a report.
Plans are said to be in place to introduce the quadrennial tournament from June 2021, which could be worth more than £100m for those involved.
The Times suggests that United and Liverpool will be two of 12 European clubs invited to take part, having won at least three European Cups in the past.
That qualification criteria would also see Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Ajax and Inter Milan involved if they accept the invite.
The report indicates that the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Porto, Benfica and Borussia Dortmund would then be in contention for the three other European places.
