Danny Boyle pick up Beyond Theatre award for Olympics opening ceremony

Director Danny Boyle is honoured at the Evening Standard theatre awards for creating the Olympics opening ceremony.

Film director Danny Boyle was handed the Beyond Theatre award last night for masterminding the Olympic opening ceremony at London 2012.

The 56-year-old, who has directed films including Slumdog Millionaire and Trainspotting, was honoured at the Evening Standard theatre awards for the show, which included a scene with the Queen and actor Daniel Craig, who plays fictional secret agent James Bond.

Boyle was presented with the award, which "celebrates theatricality outside the confines of the auditorium", by retired cyclist Victoria Pendleton, who was booted off reality show Strictly Come Dancing over the weekend.

Meanwhile, artist Lee Merrill Sendall recently accused Boyle of stealing his idea for the ceremony.
