Former chief constable Sir Norman Bettison has a case to answer for "discreditable conduct and abuse of authority" following the Hillsborough disaster.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission have announced that former West Yorkshire chief constable Sir Norman Bettison has a case to answer for his involvement in the aftermath of the Hillsborough tragedy.

Revelations emerged last year showing that a number of officers within the South Yorkshire Police tried to shift blame onto Liverpool fans when 96 of their supporters died due to a crush at the Hillsborough Stadium in 1989.

Bettison, who was a prominent figure in the investigation, was probed by the IPCC following the Hillsborough Independent Panel's findings.

The police watchdog has announced that Bettison has a case to answer for "discreditable conduct and abuse of authority".

The IPCC have claimed that due to the former chief constable's retirement last year, they were unable to take any further action.
