Hillsborough families honoured at Pride of Britain Awards

The Hillsborough families are awarded at The Mirror's Pride of Britain Awards for their long campaign for justice.

The victims' families of the Hillsborough disaster were honoured at The Mirror's Pride of Britain Awards for their long campaign for justice.

The relatives of the 96 Liverpool fans who died as a result of a crush at the Hillsborough ground 24 years ago are preparing for a fresh inquest next year after getting the original 'accidental' verdict quashed.

The chairwoman of the Hillsborough Families Support Group, Margaret Aspinall, accepted the award during the ceremony in London on behalf of the campaigners.

"This is the pride of Merseyside - I'd like to thank our city for standing by us all these years," the Liverpool Echo quotes Aspinall as saying. "It's been one hell of a journey, not been easy."

Aspinall was presented with the award from former Liverpool players Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes and Jamie Carragher, as well as comedian John Bishop.
