Ex-Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard joins 'The Telegraph' as football columnist

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard joins The Telegraph as a football columnist.

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has joined The Telegraph as the publication's new football columnist.

The 35-year-old currently plays in the United States for MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy, but he will dedicate one column a month to the British newspaper.

Gerrard's first piece will be a preview of this Sunday's Capital One Cup final between his former club and Manchester City at Wembley.

The midfielder made over 700 appearances for Liverpool, where he won numerous trophies, including two FA Cups, three League Cups and the Champions League crown in 2005.

"On and off the pitch, I've always been very selective about who I work with and who I trust," Gerrard told The Telegraph. "I'm delighted to be joining the Telegraph Sport team because I believe there is a professionalism about the football coverage in the newspaper which will enable me to present my views and insights into the game in the most informative and entertaining way possible.

"I'm looking forward to being a columnist and trying to get across that side of the game the fans can't see, and maybe offer a greater level of understanding of the demands, the pressures, and the emotional highs and lows of trying to succeed at the highest level of modern football. What I can promise is I will bring to my column what I have always tried to do in every media interview as a player - to be honest and fair."

As well as writing a monthly column during the remainder of the Premier League season, Gerrard will provide his insight throughout the European Championships in France this summer.

The midfielder's first column will be published online this Friday and will be featured in Saturday's newspaper.
