Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren admits that he fears for the safety of his family after his Zagreb flat was raided by thieves during the summer while he slept.

Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren has revealed that he was robbed while on holiday with his family and believes that he may have been gassed.

The 28-year-old was enjoying a break in his Croatia homeland when the incident took place during the summer, resulting in the arrests of four men aged 25 to 33-years-old.

Cash and jewellery were taken from the Zagreb flat by the thieves, but Lovren - who has spent the last four years in English football with Southampton and Liverpool - fears that he and his family could be targeted again.

"Yes, I was robbed. They have stolen everything from me," he said in June at the time of the incident. "I heard absolutely nothing. It is as if they had put something in my apartment for me to fall asleep. They could have kidnapped my kids, and I wouldn't have noticed at all. This is a tough period of my life.

"I am afraid they might kidnap my kids. It was my son's birthday on the day and all this is going on. I've spent a lot of money for removing all the pics of my kids from the internet. I don't know what would have happened had I been woken and found burglars."

Lovren has been caught up in off-field drama in the past, as it was revealed last year that a gangster who had a fling with his wife had since targeted him in a £3.5m extortion plot.

Liverpool have since clarified that the quotes made by Lovren, attributed to The Sun by many British tabloids, were in fact given to Croatian publication Index.
