Liverpool host final Hillsborough memorial service at Anfield for 96 victims

Liverpool host their annual Hillsborough memorial service for the last time at Anfield.

Liverpool have hosted their final Hillsborough memorial service at Anfield to remember the 96 victims of the 1989 tragedy.

The Premier League club have held an annual service at their stadium for the last 27 years, but it was decided in January by the victims' families that this year's would be the last.

Ninety-six Liverpool supporters died as a result of a crush at the Hillsborough stadium in Sheffield during the April 15, 1989 FA Cup semi-final between the Merseyside outfit and Nottingham Forest.

Today, manager Jurgen Klopp and his players were among those in attendance at the service, which included readings delivered by club legend Kenny Dalglish and former Everton striker Graeme Sharp.

A minute's silence was held across the city at 3.06pm - the time when the FA Cup match was abandoned due to the troubling scenes in the stadium.

At the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, bells tolled 96 times, while shops and public transport were encouraged to take a moment to remember the victims.

Elsewhere, jurors involved in the new inquests into the tragedy are deliberating their conclusions.
