Police try to hold off violent Lazio fans following defeat to Roma

Police reportedly fire tear gas at Lazio fans while trying to calm violent scenes following the defeat to Roma.

Police in Italy were called into action on Monday night due to an outbreak of violence from Lazio fans following their side's defeat to Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

The Derby della Capitale ended in a 2-1 triumph for Roma following a late goal from Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa.

The result means that Lazio's place in next season's Champions League remains in danger of being lost as they are just three points above Napoli, who they play in their final game this weekend.

Following the match, anger bubbled over and a number of Lazio fans threw bottles at police officers, who attempted to calm the trouble by firing tear gas at the supporters, according to The Mirror.

Reports have claimed that two fans suffered injuries during the violent scenes.
