The plane which crashed in Colombia with Brazilian footballers on board is said to have run out of fuel mid-flight.

A leaked audio recording from the tragic flight appears to have confirmed claims that the aircraft faltered due to an electrical failure caused by a lack of fuel, the AFP agency reports.

Just six of the 77 people on board the flight survived the disaster, which claimed the lives of members of Brazil's Chapecoense football team, their manager Caio Junior and his coaching staff.

A tape published by the Colombian media has depicted the pilot requesting to land several times due to a "total electric failure" and lack of fuel. He reports to be flying at 9,000ft (2,743m) before the recording cuts out.

Chapecoense were traveling to compete in the Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional of Colombia when the tragedy struck.

Their opponents have requested that the trophy be awarded to the grief-stricken club.
