The BBC has apologised on behalf of golf commentator Peter Allis following his alleged sexist remark during coverage of The Open at St Andrews.
Just before Zach Johnson took a putt during Monday's playoff, the 84-year-old suggested what his wife Kim will want to spend the £1.8m prize money on.
Allis said: "That's Kim looking on, anxiously thinking, 'if this goes in, we've got a new kitchen'."
After receiving criticism for his comment on social media, a BBC spokeswoman said: "Peter made a light-hearted comment which was inappropriate and we apologise if anyone was offended."
Johnson missed the putt but went on to claim the Claret Jug in Scotland.
