Maria Sharapova "flattered" by Twitter response

Maria Sharapova admits that she is "flattered" by the response her Twitter account has received this week, with 60,000 users deciding to follow her in just three days.

Maria Sharapova has admitted that she has a lot of catching up to do on Twitter after joining the social networking site earlier this week.

Despite arriving relatively late to the world of tweeting, Sharapova has amassed over 60,000 followers in three days.

The Russian star revealed that she has been surprised at the level of response her four tweets to date have received.

She told reporters: "It's flattering, It just shows you the power of social media, how everyone is just online these days with devices.

"It's pretty crazy, but it shows you how powerful these things are. I'm happy that I'm able to share some things with my fans they don't get to see, or hear me say. It's just a fun way to communicate with them.

"I'm a rookie. There are a lot of things I'm still learning about. I'm just starting to follow things and people. But I won't be doing it every single minute. I won't be telling people what I'm eating. I think that's very non-interesting."

Sharapova continued her impressive start at this year's Australian Open yesterday with a second successive whitewash win.
