Two Spanish riders die in crash at World Superbike event in California

Spanish riders Bernat Martinez and Daniel Rivas Fernandez die after crashing during a World Superbike support event in California at the weekend.

Two Spanish riders have died after crashing during a World Superbike support event in California on Sunday.

Bernat Martinez, 35, and Daniel Rivas Fernandez, 27, were involved in the multi-bike collision in the MotoAmerica Superbike/Superstock 1000 race at Mazda Raceway in Laguna Seca.

Martinez was rushed to a Monterey hospital by ambulance, while Fernandez was airlifted to Salinas, but both died at the weekend as a result of their injuries.

A statement from MotoAmerica president Wayne Rainey said: "I really don't have any words to describe what we all feel.

"First and foremost, is the loss to the families and loved ones. Our sincere condolences goes out to each and every one of them as well as the MotoAmerica family."

The crash occurred on lap one of the circuit.
