World number three Tiger Woods believes that 14-year-old Andy Zhang deserves his place in this year's US Open.

Zhang was drafted in as a replacement for the injured Paul Casey and will become the youngest player to compete in the tournament since World War Two.

Woods said: "I tried to qualify when I was 15 and didn't make it, so all credit to Andy.

"He earned his spot. He went out there and went through both qualifying stages and did it. He posted the scores when the pressure was on.

"It's never too young if you can do it. That's the great thing about this game, it's not handed to you."

Current record-holder Tadd Fujikawa was 15 when he played in the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot.
