Sergio Garcia left a note in Tiger Woods's locker at the US Open to apologise for comments he made about the world number one.

Spaniard Garcia was not punished for making what could be seen as a racist remark about Woods at the European Tour's annual awards ceremony last month.

He was already angry at Woods for causing crowd noise while he took a shot at the Players Championship and when asked if he would have the American around for dinner replied: "We will have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken."

Garcia apologised soon afterwards but this week's US Open is the first time the two men have seen each other since.

The pair shook hands when they saw each other on the practice ground yesterday but no direct apology was made by Garcia, who couldn't find Woods later on so left the note.

"We saw each other on the range," said Garcia. "I felt it was not the appropriate place, out of respect to him and the other players to do it there, so I was hoping to meet him after the round but he was gone. This morning I was here early and I did not see him around.

"I did leave him a handwritten note and hopefully he can take a look at it. It's a big week and I understand that it's difficult to meet up. Hopefully we will be able to but if not, at least he can read the note and be happy with that.

"If he wants to show [the media] the note he can, I don't have any problem with that. But I am not going to be the one showing."

The US Open at Merion kicks off on Thursday and you can follow live text coverage here on Sports Mole from 2.30pm.
