Europe's Ryder Cup hero Graeme McDowell was on the losing side of his match against Mikko Ilonen on day two of the World Match Play Championship in Kent.
Yesterday, the defending champion clinched an opening-day win, but on Thursday, McDowell suffered a 2&1 defeat to Ilonen after winning four holes through 17.
McDowell's fellow Ryder Cup teammate Victor Dubuisson had a better day by beating Shane Lowry 3&2, which keeps him at the top of Pool Gabrielsson.
Pablo Larrazabal finished 1 up over Stephen Gallacher, while Joost Luiten and Henrik Stenson recorded victories over Alexander Levy and Francesco Molinari respectively.
Jamie Donaldson, who clinched the winning point for Europe in Gleneagles last month, won four holes to clinch a 3&2 victory over Jonas Blixt, while the USA's Patrick Reed grabbed his first triumph of the tournament with a 2&1 win over Paul Casey.
Stenson and George Coetzee are currently tied at the top of Pool Palmer, while Blixt and Donaldson share the top spot in Pool McCormack.
Luiten leads the way in Pool Larson at the London Club.
