Europe Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal has admitted that his side "need to play better golf" to stand a chance of overturning the USA's 5-3 lead.
After an even morning, USA dominated the afternoon session with a flurry of birdies and Olazabal has called on his side to find more birdies of their own if they are to stand a chance of retaining the Ryder Cup.
Olazabal said: "We will address what happened today. I'm going to make it clear to the boys that they need to step it up. They need to play better golf; simple as that.
"There are no secrets about this game. You have to make more birdies than your opponent. And if you don't do that, you're going to struggle."
Europe will be hoping for a change in fortunes when the second foursomes session begins on Saturday morning.
