Darren Clarke believes that Europe may have to reconsider its policy of not asking a golfer to be a Ryder Cup captain twice for 2014.

Darren Clarke has led calls for Colin Montgomery to captain Europe again at the 2014 Ryder Cup.

Typically, captains are only appointed once, but the USA confirmed earlier this month that Tom Watson will lead the American side in Gleneagles in two years' time, having previously been captain in 1993.

The 2011 Open Championship winner told BBC Sport: "We seriously need the right man for the job. We do have an [unwritten] rule where we don't ask anybody to do it again, but we might have to look at that.

"I think it could well affect who is appointed. A lot of people, myself included, were surprised when Tom Watson was appointed.

"It's a big statement and brilliant for the event. There are few more iconic figures in golf, he's adored in Scotland and it sends out a statement that they are very serious about winning the trophy back."

Montgomery captained Europe to victory at Celtic Manor in the 2010 tournament.
