The Italian made a lightning-fast start, taking the second and third holes to build a two-up lead after three.
However, the world number two began to warm up towards the end of the front nine, taking the fourth and sixth holes to square the match.
The two men have been unable to make a breakthrough before reaching the 10th tee, where they will start the back nine.
