Furyk, starting at the ninth hole, began with a bogey, but that was to be the only one as he plundered six birdies in his opening gambit.
Lee Westwood, fresh from his disappointment at Muirfield, got around in 66 shots and is tied for second with David Hearn on four-under.
Fellow Englihsman Paul Casey also enjoyed a good first round, carding 67 to share third place with five others, including Matt Kuchar and Jason Day.
Justin Rose (-2), Sergio Garcia (-1) and Rory McIlroy (-1) also made solid starts, but it was not such a good day for Tiger Woods (+1) and Phil Mickelson (+1).
