Great Britain's Ian Poulter has expressed his disappointment with his performance at the WGC World Match Play at Dove Mountain in Arizona.

The 2010 winner was three down after seven holes against American Rickie Fowler, eventually going down 2&1 in the first round of the competition.

"Disappointed with my performance today, did not deserve to move on," he wrote on Twitter. "Congrats to Rickie Fowler."

Fellow Briton Luke Donald also failed to make the last 32 following a 5&4 defeat to Matteo Manassero, but Rory McIlroy progressed to the next phase by seeing off Boo Weekley 3&2.

McIlroy was denied a meeting with compatriot Lee Westwood, who went down 5&3 to Harris English.
