Francesco Molinari breaks the course record of 64 with a magnificent 62 in the first round of the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart.

Francesco Molinari has smashed the course record at Castle Stuart after carding a 62 in the first round of the Scottish Open.

The Italian did not drop a shot during his 10-under par round, which included birdies on each of the final five holes.

Molinari, who was came close to victory at last week's French Open, came within three shots of the European Tour's first ever score of 59.

Instead, the 29-year-old settled for improving the course record by two strokes.

The course was offering excellent scoring opportunities on the first day, with lots of players going round under par.

Soren Kjeldsen is the closest to Molinari, finishing on seven-under, ahead of Shane Lowry and Robert Coles, who are both on six-under.

Defending champion Luke Donald shot a 67 to leave himself on five-under, along with Pablo Larrazabal and Oscar Floren.
