Phil Mickelson has said that a ban on long putters would be "grossly unfair".
Golf's ruling bodies are considering plans to prohibit the use of putters than can be anchored to the body, with a decision due soon.
The 42-year-old told Sky Sports News: "I understand both sides, it's just that I don't think you can take away what you've allowed players to use, practise and play with for 30 years. I think it is grossly unfair.
"I am concerned about some amateur players that use it and I don't want to deter people from the game of golf."
Adam Scott, Keegan Bradley and Webb Simpson have been among those using belly or broomhandle putters during the last year.
