McIlroy climbs to career-high second

US Open champion Rory McIlroy rises to a career-high world ranking of second following his fourth-place finish at the WGC-HSBC Champions event.

Rory McIlroy has risen to a career-high world ranking of number two after his fourth-place finish at the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai.

A birdie on the final hole was crucial for the the Northern Irish US Open champion, who would have remained third had he not holed the putt.

McIlroy jumps ahead of Lee Westwood and is now only behind Luke Donald.

"4th wasn't what I was looking for but still a solid week overall. On the upside I'll move to number 2 in the world rankings tomorrow!" the 22-year-old wrote on his Twitter page.

The Champions event in Shanghai was won by Germany's Martin Kaymer, who also climbs the rankings, rising two places to fourth.
