Madeira Islands Open gets new July date

The European Tour reschedules the washed-out Madeira Islands Open for the summer.

The Madeira Island Open has been rescheduled for the summer after being washed out over the weekend.

Only one round of the European Tour tournament was able to be played as strong winds, dense fog and heavy rain caused its cancellation.

Keith Waters, chief operating officer of the European Tour, said in a statement: "Given the importance of the Madeira Islands Open and our close working relationship with the golf club and sponsors, we were very keen to reschedule the tournament and the fact that we have managed to do so this quickly is testament to the desire and commitment of all parties to reach an agreement."

The event, which had to be reduced to a 36-hole competition because of bad weather last year, will now take place between July 30 and August 2.
