Darren Clarke targets return to Europe's Ryder Cup team

Open winner Darren Clarke has targeted a return as a player to Europe's Ryder Cup team and hasn't ruled out captianing the side one day.

Open winner Darren Clarke has spoken of his hope to feature in the 2012 Ryder Cup in Medinah, Illinois.

The 42-year-old, who was one of Colin Montgomerie's vice-captains in Wales last October, also suggested that he may captain the European side himself one day.

"It is definitely still an ambition, and if I get the opportunity to be Ryder Cup captain, possibly I may have a little bit more respect having been a major champion," he said.

The Northern Irishman's last appearance as a player for the European team was in 2006, just six weeks after his wife Heather lost her battle with breast cancer. Clarke won all three of his games at the tournament.
