Luke Donald experiments with putting

Luke Donald says that he has experimented with his driver by using it as a long range putter during his practice rounds at Augusta National.

World number one Luke Donald has revealed that he might try using his driver as a long-range putter at The Masters.

The 34-year-old said that the nine-degree club has the perfect amount of loft to get the ball to run through the fringe and onto the greens of Augusta National.

"I am thinking about using the driver around the greens even though Sergio [Garcia] was looking at me strangely during our practice rounds!" The Mirror quotes Donald as saying. "I have never used it in a tournament before. I will make the decision the day before.

"I have tried the 3-wood and the 5-wood but with the driver, I like the way the ball runs through the green from the fringe. When it gets drier, the grass becomes very sticky around the greens and I just found the driver had the perfect loft to go through the grass a little bit.

"I am a good chipper and will still do that mostly. It is certainly something I've been playing around with."

The first major championship of the year gets underway this Thursday.
