Darren Clarke has won his first major title at Royal St Georges after a three-shot victory.

Clarke shot a level par round of 70 to finish clear of Americans Dustin Johnson (72) and four-time major winner Phil Mickelson (68).

The 42-year-old, who was playing in his 20th Open Championship, becomes only the second Northern Irishman to win the Claret Jug.

"It is just incredible. I'm a bit speechless. I played okay today, I did what I had to do and the last few holes when I was far ahead I just tried to be careful and not do anything stupid," he told BBC Sport.

"The celebrations could be long and - not arduous - very enjoyable tonight."

Northern Irish golfers have now won three of the last six major championships, with Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell winning the last two US Opens.

In response to Clarke's victory, McIlroy tweeted: "Northern Ireland. Golf capital of the world!"
