James Vowles has admitted that Sauber, now under full Audi ownership, might be a viable option for standout rookie Franco Colapinto in 2025.
The 21-year-old Argentine driver has quickly caught the attention of the Formula 1 paddock with his strong performances since replacing Logan Sargeant at Williams from Monza.
However, from 2025, Carlos Sainz is set to step into that seat.
"I still think Alex (Albon) and Carlos is the right line-up for Williams," said team boss Vowles, "as we continue to grow and aim to fight for the title."
"Nevertheless, I am incredibly proud of what Franco has achieved already," Vowles added.
Colapinto, the most prominent talent in Williams' driver development program, could emerge as a potential candidate to partner Nico Hulkenberg at Audi-Sauber next year.
However, any such move would need an agreement involving Vowles.
"Of course, he will remain part of the Williams family," Vowles insisted. "But I also hope he can continue to race somewhere - ideally in Formula 1."
"Realistically, there is only one seat left," Vowles said, referring to Sauber. "We will see what we can do there with Audi and whether we can find a way to work together."
Colapinto's debut in Formula 1 is so recent that when Lewis Hamilton wanted to give the rookie a shoutout after his points-scoring performance in Baku, the seven-time world champion struggled to recall his name.
After giving praise to Oliver Bearman, Hamilton told a reporter: "I don't remember the other kid's name. Uh, in a Williams. Cap...? Colapinto," he added, when prompted.
"He did a great job this weekend as well. I have to say that it's nice to see so many young, talented drivers coming through," Hamilton remarked.
