Nico Rosberg on pole position for United States Grand Prix

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg beats teammate and championship rival Lewis Hamilton to pole position at the United States Grand Prix in Austin.

Nico Rosberg has clinched pole position ahead of Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton for this weekend's United States Grand Prix in Austin.

Rosberg had the edge at the start of the top 10 battle for pole as his teammate ran slightly wide on the final corner to drop 0.1 seconds behind the German.

As they posted their second flying laps at the end of the session, Rosberg went quicker still, while the championship leader was unable to improve on his time.

Williams duo Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa will start from the second row, while Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo completed the top five.

Sebastian Vettel, who will start from the pit lane in Sunday's race after changing his entire power unit, posted a couple of lap times, but dropped out in the first part of qualifying.

Adrian Sutil made it into the top 10 shootout to secure Sauber's first appearance in P3 this season, but he could not match the time of those around him in the battle for pole.
